This week our group has made a lot of progress. We have decided that our finalized problem is that many people don’t know how to escape because they are not prepared. We finalized our problem by contacting many sources such as police and fire departments. While contacting these departments, we made sure to ask many questions to help us finalize our problem. We asked them how prepared they thought people were for disaster overall. There immediate response was most people are not prepared. The problem with so many people not being prepared is that they become panicked during a disaster because they have no clue on what to do. We want to be able to fix this problem by possibly helping people be more prepared and less panicked during a disaster. This app will give people a clear sense of direction during the escape process.
Along with solving our problem, we also created a solution. Our solution is to create an app that will show the users during a disaster if they are in a safe area based on their location and where to go if not. At first we were pondering on our solution because of the time limit. Based on our feedback everyone we talked to has loved our idea and thinks it will be so helpful. Therefore, we have decided that the app would be the best solution to go with. This app will also show several routes on how to get to the nearest shelter in the case of either fires or floods and this will help people while planning for the disaster. While, thinking of ideas on how to solve our problem we also researched what other organizations were doing as well. We learned that on the American Red Cross website they have a a page for Disaster Preparedness. On this page the organization gives 3 simple steps on how to create an emergency plan, a template to help plan, and also some tips to help people create their plan in the case of a disaster. The image below is a sketch we created this week on what we were thinking about making our app look like.
