This week our group has been working on contacting police and fire departments to get information for the best and safest escape routes for research on escape routes, that we will be creating our project one and creating an idea for this project. So far, we have been thinking about creating an app, that will show that best escape route for several disasters. We have realized that for certain disasters, there are different routes and different things to look at. We also became more aware on that fact it depends where you are when escaping, for example if there is only a one main street leading to your home. We also want our app for this project to be connected with police and fire departments because they have the most reliable sources.
Over this week we have contacted the Beverly Hills fire department and the West-Los Angeles police department. We have learned that when escaping from fires, these departments look at wind speed and the direction of it. We have also learned that during a disaster the police department works with managing the traffic and keeping people away from the disaster area while fire departments take care of the disaster. We also got feedback on our idea from the West-Los Angeles police department and they thought it was a great idea because people are always on their phones and in the case of a disaster people will most likely be on their phones to contact people. Also, many people are most likely panicking and not thinking straight so they thought an app may be able to lead them to a safe location.
When asking the officer if he thought people were prepared for disasters he immediately said no. He said people have other concerns and priorities. However, during a disaster people are panicking and when trying to escape they could potentially take a dangerous route to get them hurt. They could get caught in a place where people may not be able to rescue them. During disasters this happens very frequently. We believe that our app will help guide people to a safe destination in the case if a disaster. Our app will be updated to the situation and will be very fast and easy to access. We think that from our research it will help lots of to people stay safe.
